The history of the Douglas surname

The Douglas surname carries a complex and layered history. Wealthy Scottish merchant families bearing the Douglas name owned plantations and enslaved people in the Caribbean — in territories such as Demerara and St. Vincent — with those enslaved individuals living and labouring in the colonies far from Scotland.

 

The most widely known Black figure to carry this name is the American abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery in Maryland, he chose the surname himself after escaping — inspired by a character in a novel by Sir Walter Scott. In Scotland, he famously connected with audiences by calling himself "the Black Douglas," invoking the name of the great medieval Scottish warriors. His parents, Reverend Val Benjamin (born in Clarendon, Jamaica, 22nd November 1950) and David Albert Douglas (born in St Catherine, Jamaica,14th June 1942), brought their own heritage with them to Britain. A Remarkable Coincidence of Name and Date

Raymond's father shared his name with David Douglas (25 June 1799 – 12 July 1834), the Scottish botanist who gave his name to the Douglas Fir. Scottish botanist David Douglas died on 12 July 1834 — exactly 140 years to the day before Raymond Douglas was born on 12 July 1974. That span covers 51,134 days, accounting for 34 leap days across the period. Same date. Same Surname. A thread of time that is impossible to ignore. It is a remarkable thread of time, name, and chance — one that adds another layer of meaning to the Douglas identity that runs through this company and its creative work.

Clan Douglas

The name Douglas comes from the Scottish Gaelic "dubh glas" — meaning "dark water" or "black stream." It refers to the Douglas Water, a stream running through Douglasdale in South Lanarkshire, the clan's ancestral territory. The saying once used to describe the family's reach — "Men have seen the stream, but what eye ever beheld its source?" — captures something of the depth and mystery that has surrounded the Douglas name for centuries.

 

Clan Douglas is one of the most storied and powerful families in Scottish history. Their influence was so great they were known as "the power behind the throne," their reach extending from the battlefields of the Wars of Independence into the courts and politics of the Scottish Crown. The clan's motto, "Jamais Arrière" — Never Behind — reflects a character that has always pressed forward, whatever the cost.

 

The clan's most celebrated figure is Sir James Douglas, known as "the Good," a close companion and lieutenant to King Robert the Bruce. On his deathbed in 1329, Bruce asked Douglas to carry his embalmed heart on a crusade to the Holy Land. In 1330, fighting the Moors in Spain, Sir James found himself surrounded. He threw the silver casket containing the King's heart into the enemy charge, crying "Forward, brave heart!" before falling in battle. The heart was recovered and returned to Scotland, buried at Melrose Abbey — and it was added to the Douglas coat of arms as a permanent mark of loyalty, sacrifice, and faith.

 

That crowned heart remains one of the most recognisable symbols in Scottish heraldry. For Rai Rai Productions, it carries a quiet resonance: a crown not of earthly power, but of devotion to something greater than oneself.

 

The clan eventually divided into two main branches — the Black Douglases (the senior line) and the Red Douglases (the Earls of Angus). Frederick Douglass's self-chosen connection to "the Black Douglas" was no accident. He understood the weight the name carried, and he claimed it deliberately.

The Douglas Tartan

The Douglas tartan is as understated and dignified as the clan's character demands. Its primary colours are dark green and black — echoing the Gaelic meaning of the name itself — with deep blue and thin white or grey stripes threading through. The crown in our logos carries no earthly meaning. It does not represent status, power, or prestige in the worldly sense. For Raymond and for Rai Rai Productions, it is an expression of personal faith — an acknowledgement of a higher power as the ultimate King of kings and Creator of all things — Jesus Christ of Nazareth, God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob — while affirming the sovereignty, purpose, and self-determination that define the company's ethos. This is a crown of conviction, not of ego. It says: we know who we answer to, and we are building something that reflects that.

The Colours

The logo incorporates Green (HEX #00ab01) and a strengthened presence of Black (HEX #000000) — chosen deliberately to make the design uniquely our own, and to honour Black nations of the world.
